2020 Volkswagen Tiguan vs 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan

2020 Tiguan driving next to water

The 2019 Tiguan is a great crossover SUV. Critics loved it. Owners loved it. It had a bunch of cargo space and 3-row seating standard. Its performance numbers were very respectable. Naturally, such an acclaimed vehicle has big shoes to fill for the next year. That means auto makers have to balance keeping what’s good about the vehicle the same while simultaneously improving upon it.

Let’s see if Volkswagen managed to bottle lightning twice in a row. Time to compare the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan and the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan.

New Standard Safety Features

While the 2019 Tiguan was definitely a safe vehicle, the 2020 Tiguan is even better. The 2020 Tiguan adds on front collision detection that pairs with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection to minimize the chances of collisions with both other vehicles and pedestrians. Also added are the blind spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert systems. They alert you via a small icon in the corresponding mirror that there is someone in your blind spot or heading towards you while backing up. All these are also available on the 2019, but they are in an add-on package that costs a few hundred dollars.

Smart Device Integration

The 2020 Tiguan has two huge advantages over the 2019 when it comes to tech: Car-Net® 2.0 and the integrated 4G-LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. Volkswagen reworked Car-Net® for 2020, increasing availability by expanding it to most of the 2020 Volkswagen lineup. The service is also free for the first 5 years after purchase. The Wi-Fi hotspot supports up to 4 devices at the same time. It can be added to eligible existing plans or added to a no-commitment pre-paid plan for $20 per month.
