2020 Updates for Volkswagen Car-Net® Feature

Car-Net® is a mobile service offered for Volkswagen vehicles. It lets you do things like start, lock, and monitor your car all from your smart phone. It’s a great feature. Unfortunately, it was only available on a few 2019 Volkswagen models.

Apparently Volkswagen wasn’t happy with the selectivity either. They’ve decided to completely revamp the service and give it a soft relaunch for the 2020 model year.

Let us show you what’s new for Car-Net® in 2020.

Here’s a quick overview of the major Car-Net® updates and changes:

  • Standard on most 2020 model year vehicles
  • Free for first five years after in-service date
  • In-vehicle 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot
  • Comprehensive diagnostic DriveView™ system

Enhanced Availability

Making Car-Net® a brand-wide standard is a smart move for Volkswagen. Making the service free for the first five years is genius. With nearly 80% of Americans owning smartphones, the choice to integrate multiple Volkswagen systems into an mobile app shows a lot of foresight. We wouldn’t be surprised if similar features became an industry standard like Apple Carplay™ and Android Auto have (both of which are available on 2020 Volkswagen models, by the way).

Truly Mobile Hotspot

New 2020 Volkswagen vehicles with Car-Net® will include a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot that can support up to four devices simultaneously. The data plan is provided by Verizon. If you’re already a Verizon customer and have a compatible plan, then you can add your 2020 Volkswagen vehicle onto it. For non-Verizon customers, a simple, no-contract plan can be purchased for $20 per month.

Periodic Diagnostic Reports

DriveView™ provides the driver with feedback regarding driver behavior, like gas mileage, braking tendencies, acceleration rates, etc. It’s designed to help you identify areas where you can improve your driving and thus your vehicle’s efficiency. Volkswagen has set a program whereby you can send these reports into your insurance company in order to receive potential discounts.
