“Made in USA” VW ID.4 Will Be Slightly Different from overseas models

If you’ve been waiting too long to get behind the wheel of the Volkswagen ID.4, your wait may well be over very soon. Volkswagen currently imports the ID.4 electric crossover from Germany, but that’s about to change soon as the company is gearing up to start manufacturing the ID.4 in the US at its Chattanooga, Tennessee plant. However, more interesting is that the “made in America” ID.4 will be slightly different from its German counterpart. When is the US-Built Volkswagen ID.4 coming?

In a recent press briefing, Volkswagen of America CEO Scott Keogh has revealed that pre-production prototypes of the US-built ID.4 are currently being rolled out the assembly line in Chattanooga, and “volume production will begin (sometime) in September or October” this year.

He also said that the US-built ID.4 would be almost identical to the German models, but only “96 percent of it is identical”.

“The core mechanical bits are still there, but we’ll be switching from the LG-supplied battery to one from SKI that will be manufactured in Georgia. The cell chemistry is slightly different, but the packaging is exactly the same,” he said. Because the battery pack is hidden underneath the vehicle, you’ll probably not be able to see the difference. You will, however, be able to see “a slightly different center console design that’s more American style.”

How much will it cost?

As far as the pricing details of the US-built ID.4 are concerned, as of January 2022, the base rear-wheel-drive ID.4 Pro starts at an MSRP of $40,760 and goes all the way up to $46,760 for the AWD-equipped VW ID.4 Pro S Gradient. And according to Keogh, these prices “will hold” for US-built cars as well.

Wait. There’s more good news. You can expect to see a less expensive, entry-level ID.4 soon, and this model will be priced at around $35,000. If you factor in the available $7,500 federal tax credit, the effective price drops to less than $28,000 – about the same price as an average brand-new gas-fueled car in the US.
