When you explore the Volkswagen model lineup, you will find no shortage of German-engineered precision, turbocharged powertrains, frugal fuel economy and refined interiors. These elements are hallmarks of the Volkswagen brand and have gone a long way towards making Volkswagen a cornerstone of the automotive industry. With that being said, a true off-road-ready option has been lacking.

With the debut of the Volkswagen Tiguan GTE Active Concept design, Volkswagen engineers have found a way to combine all of the signature Volkswagen elements. Based on an already impressive 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan design, the new hybrid concept promises plenty of off-road thrills.

Volkswagen Tiguan GTE Active Concept Hybrid Powertrain

That’s right, you read that correctly. The all-new Volkswagen Tiguan GTE Active Concept features a plug-in hybrid powertrain that is both potent and efficient. Featuring a turbocharged and direct-injected TSI gasoline engine that manufactures 148 horsepower and dual electric motors, the Tiguan GTE Active Concept yields a thrilling 221 net horsepower. With this hybrid powertrain under the hood, the new Volkswagen concept is expected to provide a driving range of 580 miles and can go 20 miles on pure electric power. Even more impressive, the Volkswagen Tiguan GTE Active Concept can reach speeds of 70 mph on battery power alone.

Another asset that makes the new crossover concept so exciting for drivers in Northern Virginia is an innovative 4MOTION Active Control all-wheel drive system. Capable of front-, rear- and all-wheel drive performance, the new hybrid concept delivers true off-road excitement. This concept has a default rear-wheel drive setting that is powered by the electric motors when there is a full charge.

When improved traction is required or a preset mode is selected, the crossover employs the full power of the hybrid powertrain. A rotary, push-button switch for the reimagined 4MOTION Active Control unit will allow you to select from six driving modes — On-Road, Off-Road, Sport, Snow, Charge and Battery Hold — each adapted to a different driving experience.

Second-generation Volkswagen Tiguan models are built on the innovative modular transverse matrix (MQB) and cut an impressive figure on the road. A long wheelbase, short overhangs and sleek packaging are trademarks of this design platform and lend themselves well to the Tiguan GTE Active Concept design. Increased ground clearance and a front skid plate point to off-road excitement and a stunning front end with standard LED lighting are a signature of this new concept.

Inside the Tiguan GTE Active Concept, drivers will find an arsenal of high-tech features and bold design cues. Designed to mirror the off-road exterior, the cabin of the Volkswagen concept employs dark aluminum trim strips around the instrument panel and dark chrome accents on the steering wheel.

Two-tone Nappa leather interior is decked out in Rhodium Grey and Dark Graphite with a three-dimensional pattern that is magnified by Dragon Red accents throughout the cabin. Technology is another focus of the Tiguan GTE Active Concept with a new MIB II infotainment system that employs a vivid 9.2-inch touchscreen and access to Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
