2017 Volkswagen Beetle Turbocharged Engine Specs

Although there is no arguing that the major appeal of the Beetle is its design, just recently, the engine found under the curved hood of the compact car received an upgrade that has helped to make the Beetle more appealing in the performance department as well. The engine now comes turbocharged, helping it to produce some impressive power, while still maintaining some money-saving fuel efficiency ratings. To give you a better idea of what that power and efficiency looks like, let’s delve into the specs of the engine.

Volkswagen Beetle Exterior BlackThe engine of the Beetle displaces 1.8 liters, which is common for a four-cylinder. When firing on all four of its cylinders, the engine manages to produce as much as 170 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, which is more than enough to give you the oomph that you desire. Compared to some of the vehicles on the market that dole out 200-plus horsepower, it may not sound like much, but you really have to take the compact size of the Beetle into consideration. Believe us when we say that 170 horsepower is plenty.

Perhaps the most appealing aspect of the engine found in the Beetle is that it does not call it quits with its power. It manages to strike a balance between power and efficiency, which really helps to set it apart. When traveling in the city, the engine is able to stretch a gallon as far as 24 mpg. On the highway, it gets as much as 33 mpg to the gallon. It means less trips to the pump, which we know you’re sure to appreciate.

It is worth noting that there used to be various engine options in the Beetle, but for the 2017 model, the options were narrowed down to the single 1.8-liter option. That is really not a bad thing, as the balance that the engine is able to deliver is really all that you could ever want. Just to clarify, the four-cylinder is not only found in the more common versions of the Beetle such as the S, SE and SEL trims, but it is also found in the special edition versions of the compact car, such as the Beetle Dune and the #PinkBeetle.
